Complete IRS Form 4868 to receive an automatic six-month extension to file your federal income taxes. Form 4868 should be filed before April 17, 2012.

Alabama State Taxes

Alabama taxpayers who cannot file their return by the due date do not need to file for an extension. According to the Alabama Department of Revenue, you will automatically be granted an extension until October 15, 2012. No paper or electronic form needs to be filed to obtain the automatic extension.

If you anticipate that you will owe additional tax on your return, you should submit your payment with Form 40V with the box "Automatic Extension Payment" checked by April 17, 2012.
