Complete IRS Form 4868 to receive an automatic six-month extension to file your federal income taxes. Form 4868 should be filed before April 18, 2011.

Minnesota State Taxes

Minnesota gives taxpayers an automatic filing extension through October 15, 2011.

If you have a balance due, you must pay the amount you owe by April 18, 2011 to avoid penalties and interest. If paying by check or money order, complete Form M13 and return it with your check in the mail.

According to the Minnesota Department of Revenue, Form M13 must be postmarked on or before April 18, 2011.
