Below is the information for New Jersey residents wishing to file for an extension of time to file for both federal and state taxes.

Federal Taxes

Complete IRS Form 4868 to receive an automatic six-month extension to file your federal income taxes. Form 4868 should be filed before April 18, 2011.

New Jersey State Taxes

New Jersey taxpayers who do not file IRS Form 4868 can request an extension of filing New Jersey state taxes by filing Form NJ-630. Form NJ-630 will provide a 180 day extension of time to file New Jersey state income tax returns only.

Note: if you have filed and received a federal extension of time to file, it is not necessary to complete Form NJ-630. You will need to enclose a copy of the federal Application for Automatic Extension (Form 4868) with your New Jersey return when you file.
