Looking to file an extension? Below is the information for Ohio residents wishing to file for an extension of time to file for both federal and state taxes.

Federal Taxes

Complete IRS Form 4868 to receive an automatic six-month extension to file your federal income taxes. Form 4868 should be filed before April 18, 2011.

Ohio State Taxes

If you complete Form 4868 and qualify for a federal extension, Ohio will honor that six month extension. Ohio taxpayers should attach of a copy of your Form 4868 or a printed copy of the federal acknowledgment when they do file their return.

If you have a balance due, you must pay the amount you owe by April 18, 2011 to avoid penalties and interest. You can make extension payments using from IT 40P.

According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, Form IT 40P must be postmarked on or before April 18, 2011.
