IRS 2008 Tax Rates for Heads of Households
(Schedule Z)

These tax tables are designed for individuals heading their household, filing their 2008 income tax return. Like the other income tax rates, the head of household rates differ dramatically from the previous year.

These tables are effective January 1, 2008, and do not take into account any credits, such as the standard deduction, mortgage deductions, etc.

Laura Lincoln's Estimated Taxes

= Base Tax + (Rate x Amount Over)
  = $5,975.00 + [.25 x ($110,000 - $43,650)]
  = $5,975.00 + (.25 x $66,350)
  = $5,975.00 + $16,587.50
  = $22,562.50

Assuming she earned the same last year, Laura's total tax dropped over $122 over last year (when she was using the 2007 income tax rate table for heads of household).

Example #2

Tyler Taylor, the head of his household, has 2008 TAXABLE INCOME of $180,000. Tyler's income falls between:

Tyler Taylor's Estimated Taxes

= Base Tax + (Rate x Amount Over)
  = $23,225.00 + [.28 x ($180,000 - $112,650)]
  = $23,225.00 + (.28 x $67,350)
  = $23,225.00 + $18,858.00
  = $42,083.00

Tyler also saved over the previous year, assuming he earned the same. His total tax dropped over $270 from his 2006 tax return (when he was using the 2007 income tax rate table for heads of household).
